In order for any system to provide its’ users with knowledge, its’ underlying business process will have to be reengineered. Business Process. Reengineering (BPR) involves modeling the processes and their activities. When enough levels of decomposition are achieved, we have a fully attributed As-Is model. At this point we will determine the cost of the Activities through a kind of Activity Based Costing. Data models can then be developed which will give us to ability to “model” knowledge flows throughout the organization. From this the To-Be model can be developed. The next phase is to migrate to future states with the end goal being the Ideal State.

An organization that does iterative process engineering is said to be an organization that manages based on Activity Based Management (ABM). An intrinsic part of the process is eliminating non-value added activities and activities that don’t add enough value.
